Brief Summary of the Article
Honduras is considered one of the least developed and least secure countries in Central America. The population in Honduras is mainly youth. In fact around 50% of the population is under the age of 19. Malnutrition and poor housing along with infant diseases are demonstrated throughout the entire country. With the poverty and unemployment, much of the population gets desperate. Many are known to turn toward drug trafficking and a well known gang known as the "Maras" use threats and violence to control the poorer districts in towns and cities.
Your Thoughts, Comments, and/or Reaction
Honduras is a low developed country. Acknowledging that much of the population is youth and since the economy is poor, many of the youth turn to violence as a control factor is troubling. As they try to change and become more prosperous or at least try to bring money home to maintain a family, they look to the United States for help. Many are known to immigrate to the United States and send money back home to help their family. Knowing that the United States is a country to reach out to the less fortunate and give many an opportunity to prosper is a great thought.
Article's Relation to "Culture"
Thousands of Hondurans leave the country each year, most of them for the US. The money sent home by the overseas workers is an important source of income for many families. With the immigration, the language barrier is soon resolved when it depends on maintaining a family back home. Honduras is a major exporter of the fruit and also Central America's second biggest coffee producer. The trade and economic aspects help share and spread language and culture not only in Honduras but throughout the world.
